-this is from the Telegraph December 20th 1963. December 20th(the very last show @ Birdland)- Johnny Chester, Tony Worsley,The Planets and the Stilletos. The Planets had leased it from the council and it needed much money on things like wiring, plumbing etc as it was a old building and also the council did'nt want to pay it and neither did the group so they left when their lease expired so that was the reason why Birdland closed as well as the group struck an deal with David and Shirley Venables who ran Teen City as Fridays was the big deal, the big crowds etc so they could not operate Friday nights.(I asked Vance Lendich of the Planets on Facebook about the reason why it closed). Birdland would become the city square and the Planets would go on to play Teen City on January 3rd 1964 which before that they did the Christmas and New Year season down the Gold Coast.
